Former Hokkaido Government Office Building

The Former Hokkaido Government Building, nicknamed Akarenga or "redbrick," was constructed in 1888 in the American Neo-Baroque style. It is an exemplar of Meiji architecture. There is a leafy forecourt and inside are the Hokkaido Archives, where Hokkaido's historical documents are stored. These facilities are open to the public.

  • Sapporo Clock Tower
Sapporo Clock Tower

The Sapporo Clock Tower was constructed in October 1878 as the drill hall of the former Sapporo Agricultural College (now Hokkaido University). The tower was designed by Professor William Wheeler, who took over as Vice President after Dr. William S. Clark. The wooden building has a balloon-frame structure that was then in vogue in central and western parts of the United States. Nijo Fish Market

The history of this market dates from 1903, when it started retailing seafood. Crabs, scallops, sea urchins, fish, other fresh and dried seafood, and vegetables and other seasonal bounties of Hokkaido await shoppers. Many restaurants near the market serve rice topped with fresh sea urchin or salmon roe and other dishes.

Maruyama Zoo

The zoo is the only facility with a gorilla in Hokkaido. There's also a bear house, where seven species of bear can be seen. The chimpanzee house has a 15-m-high jungle gym so that visitors can watch their behavior. Monkey Mountain is popular with children, as is the children's zoo where sheep and goat can be petted. This is a pleasant place to visit throughout the year.

Hoheikan

Hoheikan was opened in 1880 as a hotel for foreign engineers working on the development of Hokkaido. This Western-style hotel that incorporates traditional Japanese building skills was the first government-owned hotel in Japan. The building has been designated as a National Important Cultural Property and is used for weddings, dinner parties and other memorial events, and also as a place where you can spend a precious time with friends and family.

Mt. Moiwa Ropeway

The observatory deck at the summit commands a splendid view of central Sapporo, the Sea of Japan, the Ishikari Bay and Mt. Shokanbetsu in Mashike. The view at dusk and in the early evening is truly romantic.

Sapporo Moiwayama Skiing Ground

Closely located to downtown Sapporo, this ski hill uses the slope of Mt. Moiwa, a renowned sightseeing spot. There are 11 courses that allow all people, from beginners to the experienced, to enjoy skiing. With almost all of these courses equipped with night lighting systems, many people also enjoy dynamic skiing in the evening while admiring Sapporo's beautiful night views.
